JOY – But not always so joyful

Movies are one of my weaknesses. That and chocolate. I just love the stories that people create, the cinematography, the music, the acting, everything. Today I finally watched the movie JOY.

A story of a family across four generations, centered on the girl who becomes the woman (Jennifer Lawrence) who founds a business dynasty and becomes a matriarch in her own right. Facing betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love, Joy becomes a true boss of family and enterprise. Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy's inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces. - credit to GOOGLE for description

The movie is based on Joy Mangano, and inspired by true stories of other daring women. What I really want to share are some interesting takeaways I got from this story.

The JOURNEY

Her journey was not easy. It was met with a lot of adversity. There were a lot of challenges. She had haters & naysayers. Even with all the struggles, she had grit to keep going, and a great support base from her friends. Joy’s family was a bit bipolar in the movie. Her mom and dad did not really give total support, but ended up supporting her financially to get her business idea started. When it failed at first, all hope for support from them was gone. Her dad regretted giving assistance, Joy even regretted at one point going after this crazy dream and began to file bankruptcy due to being so financially in debt.  Her grandmother though was depicted as a very supportive person. She gave Joy a lot of support, a lot of hope, a lot of motivation and inspiration to go for it! She was always pushing her upward, knowing she was meant for something great. After her grandmother had passed away, Joy’s daughter would remind her of what her grandmother would say. That she was the one that was going to lead them to success.

Takeaways

What I took away from this movie, was the realization that I have no idea what kind of adversity I’m going to undergo at some point in my journey. I really don’t even know where I’m going to be actually be in 5 years, or what I’ll be doing. I could have this great inspiration that takes me down a totally different path, and I hope I have the guts to make the adjustments and go for it.

We have to learn to love the journey. The road will be rough, it will be filled with haters, but you just have to go for it. It will seem crazy to people who just don’t understand why you’re doing it. Why? Because it’s not normal. “Normal” is working just that safe and comfy job, not putting in more work than you’re paid for, not giving more value than what you’re asking, not doing crazy things like starting your own business or brand. Those who think that is “crazy”, or “waste of time”, are really the one’s complaining about life and money, and how they hate what they’re doing every day. If they had the guts to start creating around their strengths every single day, they would begin to find more purpose. You start to look forward to waking up, because you get start working on the things that YOU want to.

Live For Something

Joy could have stayed average, working dead end jobs feeling unfulfilled, ignoring her passions and gifts, not taking care of her family to her full capability. We need to live for something. What are you living for? What can you do today to start living for something? Go. Create. Build. Grow. Stop waiting. You have the talent, you have the skills, you just need to start using them.

Embrace the challenges, and the haters that come your way. It just means you’re doing something. I believe that when people start putting you down for following a dream or goal, they’re really envious of you. They don’t have the personal belief in themselves to get out of their comfort zone to do something. They care too much about what other people think, or what they’re going to say, so they quit before they really ever got started. Make sure you don’t listen to them. Don’t let their negative self talk infect you.

Stay the course my friends. Keep building your dreams, keep crushing your goals, keep pushing forward.

The road will be full of JOY, but not always so joyful.
